Epic Games has announced a new NA-Central Server region for Fortnite to better serve players in Mexico and the Central United States.
It’s been a long time coming! After years of asking, and numerous leaks, Fortnite finally has an NA-Central Server. In fact, it’s live in-game already following Tuesday’s huge Fortnite Most Wanted update.
You can access the NA-Central Server inside your game settings under “Language and Region”.
“We worked with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to deliver this new server region located in Dallas, Texas, USA. The NA-Central server region is using AWS Local Zones to provide a low-latency experience for players in Mexico and the Central United States, with the experience being similar to those of players in the NA-East and NA-West server regions” reads Epic’s official blog post.

How will this affect competitive?
For the remainder of Chapter 4 Season 1, all tournaments, including FNCS, will still be run separately on NA-East and NA-West servers. There may be some test events on NA-Central to help prepare for the future.
Speaking of which, starting with Chapter 4 Season 2, all Fortnite tournaments in North America will be played on NA-Central. This means one combined prize pool, one winner, and one broadcast for the whole of NA.
This is a monumental change that will undoubtedly be met with mixed responses. For some players, it may mean competing on higher ping than usual, or at a less convenient time. However, from a spectator and hype perspective it’s very exciting.
Starting in Chapter 4 Season 2, all competitive events for NA will be unified into a single region and hosted on the new NA-Central servers. Read the blog for more details: https://t.co/BJ9AOzAhoH https://t.co/tQaTmh6TrW

While the two regions are coming together for competitive, it seems that NA-East and NA-West will still be available in other modes. It will be interesting to see if this has any impact on queue times, which can already be tedious occasionally.
It’s been a long time since Epic introduced a new server region. It says “we will continue to look for improvements where we can to try and provide the best player experience possible”, so perhaps we’ll see further additions one day.
