Oceania’s best Duos battled it out on Sunday in the first major set-lobby competition of Fortnite Chapter 3.

Two years ago, Fortnite stars from all over the world including Benjyfishy and EpikWhale travelled to Melbourne to take part in the Australian Open Summer Smash. Native talent Breso ended up winning what turned out to be one of the very last LANs before the pandemic put in-person events on hold.

Fast forward to 2022 and the Summer Smash returned, this time fully online. The Duos tournament featured a number of big names from the OCE region, such as Fresh, Muselk and Looter.

Fans were delighted to see AussieAntics back on the broadcast, alongside Vandie and Coach Timmy. Better still, half of the $100,000 prize pool will be donated to charities nominated by the players themselves.

Results

Just hours before Rafael Nadal picked up his 21stGrand Slam in the tennis, Basil and Jace were crowned Champions of the Australian Open’s Fortnite counterpart. After a pretty average showing across the first three games, they came out swinging in the second half, with a 10 kill Victory Royale playing a huge part in the win.

Jace was an FNCS Champion in Chapter 2 Season 7 and Basil has plenty of strong Grand Finals placements and Cash Cup wins under his belt, but this will certainly rank highly on their lists of accolades. With Duos FNCS only weeks away, they will be hoping to keep this chemistry flowing.

Elsewhere in the standings, VortexM and Sunz were disappointed with a sixth place performance ahead of their move to Europe next season. Popular Team PWR pairing Jynx and Worthy ended the day in the tenth spot.

All in all, the Australian Open Summer Smash made for an exciting watch and has raised money for some great causes. With any luck, next time around it will be back on LAN, with even more hype!
