Are we finally at a point where (almost) everyone is happy?

For the last couple of years, aim assist has been one of the most controversial topics of conversation in the Fortnite community. The mechanic is designed to help players on controller track their opponents with the thumbsticks and is a common feature in shooter games.

The introduction of new Linear and Exponential sensitivity settings in late 2019 turned complaints of “L2 spamming” with Assault Rifles into pure outrage concerning overpowered close-range hip-fire aim assist. This peaked in Chapter 2 Season 2 when people like Dominick “UnknownxArmy” Green could seemingly hop into a box with the Drum Gun, close their eyes, and still come out on top every time.

Since then, Epic Games has made a series of adjustments, especially to aim assist on PC, which have gone a long way towards creating balance. While the odd angry social media post does still surface, pros and fans largely appear to agree that things are in a better place now.

Twitch superstar and original Fortnite controller king Nick “Nickmercs” Kolcheff has always been famous for his impeccable aiming ability. We’ve seen him beam people from Tilted Towers rooftops and during the last 12 months, do the very same in Verdansk.

Having clocked a lot of hours in both Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone, Nickmercs can give an interesting perspective on the current aim assist situation. He offered his thoughts during a recent Arena-grind stream with Ali “SypherPK” Hassan:

“I think aim assist is stronger on Call of Duty to be honest. It used to be stronger on Fortnite, but they made so many changes to aim assist on Fortnite over the years, that I think now it’s to the point where it’s stronger on Call of Duty” explained Nick.

He went on to add that although Warzone aim assist is “crazy”, it can also be way more inconsistent. There are multiple spots on the map where it will just stop working, which can really throw you off.

Overall, the MFAM boss sounds content with the state of aim assist today, “I like where it’s at on Fortnite right now. I don’t get it as crazy close range, it’s still decent, but it’s a little bit stronger now on Fortnite at distance”.

With tournaments like the FaZe Clan Elite Cup and Season 6 FNCS on the horizon, it’s good to know that we have made some solid progress this past year. Questions around aim assist and inputs will never stop altogether, and nor should they, but it sure is nice when this isn’t the only thing anyone is talking about.
