Ballatw recently VOD reviewed a Duo who were right on the border of cash placement in the Winter Royale and gave some incredibly useful insights.

For many players, competitive Fortnite is an enjoyable alternative to regular public matches, but they don’t find the success they are hoping for. This could be for a number of reasons, perhaps their mechanical skills are letting them down, or maybe they just can’t commit much time to practice. If you are placing just outside of the money, or just inside and looking to do even better, then Fortnite analyst Ballatw’s recent VOD review is a must watch.

Usually, Balla will look at gameplay from the very best pros who regularly place in the top five or so in tournaments. However, this time around he decided to mix it up, checking out footage from “lloydie” and “glass”, who just barely placed inside the money at the Winter Royale.

This particular VOD review will be a fantastic learning tool too a lot of players. Lloydie and Glass are both talented individuals who made some impressive plays, including at one point taking down Dominick “Unknown” Green and Paul “Posick” McKissock. However, they also made some key mistakes that we can all learn from.

One important theme was communication. Balla highlighted multiple examples of poor or lazy comms, which often led to a bad situation. It’s vital to keep talking during fights, having some sort of plan, and updating your partner on the location of enemies. It’s very easy to forget this when you are focusing up, but this is the time when it is most crucial.

If you are a team who struggles in the late game, make sure to define roles so that you both know what you should be doing. For example, if someone is better at tunnelling, then they should be the one leading the way. The other person can follow closely behind, split materials and look for shots if there is time. Obviously there will be times when you have to go against these roles, but they should be your go-to.

Something else that Balla picked up on was the decision to leave your teammate behind. On a couple of occasions, the Duo got split, and the person at the back was ambushed by opponents. The call was made to “play your life” rather than risk both players being eliminated. However, Balla thought that it would have been possible to turn around and try and help out. You don’t have to charge into the middle of the action, but you can at least look for shots from a distance to relieve pressure.

Of course, this was just a very brief recap of a few key mistakes that Balla discussed during the VOD review. If you are looking to improve your performance in competitive Fortnite I would suggest that you check out the full video here.
