We're getting the first rumblings of our Season 9 event with Polar Peak melting and cracking.
This is a sad, sad day for me. Polar Peak is my all-time favorite spot to land in Fortnite. I land there in solo, duos, squads, arena - you name it. It has a ton of loot, enough materials, and an easy rotation with a close Baller spawn and the new floating tower.
I loaded into Fortnite for a few games with the new patch, landed at Polar Peak as I usually do, clapped some fools, and heard a couple of strange sounds in the castle.
I went to the top to investigate but I didn't see anything, so I moved on. My mid-game rotation brought me back to the base of Polar Peak, and I started hearing the noises again. This time, I could see where they were coming from.
The cracks in the iceberg below Polar are expanding and causing the base of the location to emit a loud crunch.
The base of Polar Peak is starting to melt from r/FortNiteBR
The rest of Polar is melting underneath, as you can see from the image above.
It appears as though the days of Polar Peak are numbered. Each patch will probably cause more melting until it eventually collapses as part of the Season 9 event.
We still have a long time to go before Season 9 ends, but this is the first hint of an event that we're getting. Could Polar Peak's collapse cause an avalanche that affects the whole map? Only time will tell.

Update: I've since seen these leaked event sounds from @HYPEX on Twitter. It looks like the sound we're hearing coming from Polar is the first half of the "Cattus" sounds:
