Fortnite looks set to return to iOS following a string of cryptic tweets from Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney.

It’s been almost three years now since Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store. The ban prompted the start of the #FreeFortnite movement and a landmark legal battle.

Epic Games and Apple have not been able to come to any sort of agreement, leaving iOS users with almost no way to play the game. However, a solution could be on the horizon!

Tim Sweeney hints at Fortnite iOS return

A recent post by Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney appears to tease a comeback. But his tweet left a lot to the imagination…

On New Year’s Eve, Sweeney wrote, “Next year on iOS”. He then followed up with an in-game image from Fortnite, showing “2023” written in the sky with fireworks.

So, who do we have to thank for this news? The leading theory is a newly passed DMA (Digital Markets Act) law in Europe.

Apple will likely be forced to allow alternative app stores to run on iOS, meaning that Epic could create its own store and make Fortnite available there.

I guess time will tell.

Play Fortnite on iOS right NOW

Unfortunately, we don’t know how or when Tim Sweeney’s prophecy will come true. There is still one way to play Fortnite on your iPhone though!

Nvidia GeForce NOW is currently the best workaround for iOS gamers. You can play for free via cloud-based streaming, using either a gamepad or touchscreen controls.

This isn’t a perfect fix by any means. Many players report performance issues and severe lag. You’ll also need to upgrade to a paid subscription if you want to play for longer than an hour at a time.

With any luck, Fortnite will be back on iOS properly at some point this year. We may have to wait till autumn for the new Digital Markets Act law to take effect though.
