With one FNCS season remaining this year, Fortnite Competitive fans are beginning to look ahead to 2023.

Having cycled through game modes season-to-season during the first half of Chapter 2, Epic decided to try a new format for Fortnite’s premiere esports offering, the FNCS.

They announced Trios as the main competitive mode for the whole of 2021 – four consecutive tournaments. Though there would still be Cash Cups and smaller events for other team sizes.

The idea is to let players know what’s coming ahead of time so they can practice, allow for storylines to develop across multiple seasons, and give an overall more consistent feel to the competitive scene.

Some people liked it, others hated it. Epic seemed happy, and did the same thing for 2022, this time with Duos taking centre stage.

Now, as we approach the end of another year of competitive Fortnite, people are beginning to wonder what’s next.

Currently, the leading theory is that we’re going back to Trios…

While there’s a fairly even split between those who prefer Trios and Duos, most of the community agrees that these are the two best competitive game modes. It’s unlikely we ever get a full year of Solos or Squads.

Therefore, if Epic decides to stick to the 1 mode per year strategy, it would make sense that they swap back to Trios.

Also, while chatting with Clix during last week’s Cash Cup, Fusion Esports star Edgey said, “I’m like pretty, pretty sure. A lot of people I’ve talked to have said it’s gonna be (Trios in 2023)”.

Many would argue that right now the Fortnite map and meta are not suited to Trios. However, that could change by the time we roll into Season 5.

There is always the chance that the FNCS is scrapped altogether and replaced by something completely different next year.

Whatever the fate of Fortnite Competitive in 2023, it may well be revealed during the FNCS Invitational LAN in November. I guess we’ll have to wait and see!
