Fortnite has updated the in-game menu system to make switching game modes a breeze.

Today, dataminer @HYPEX confirmed that Epic Games has pushed the new “Sub Modes” feature live for all Fortnite users.

What are Sub Modes?

To keep the Discover tab a bit tidier, all variants of both the standard Battle Royale playlist and the Zero Build – Battle Royale playlist have been grouped together under one button. This means that you now select between Solos, Duos, Trios, and Squads directly from the lobby screen.

It may take some getting used to at first, but once you have the hang of it, this should speed up the process of getting into a match. Here’s how to use Sub Modes:

Sub Modes Guide

When you first load up Fortnite, go to the Discover tab and select either Battle Royale or Zero Build – Battle Royale.

On the Lobby Screen, click the small blue button above the yellow “PLAY!” button in the bottom right.

This will open a menu. Here you can choose which mode you want to play: Solos, Duos, Trios, or Squads.

Using this same menu, you can also toggle the “Fill Party” option. When Fill is enabled, you will be matched with other random players to complete your team.

And that’s about all there is to it. Hit “PLAY!” and you’re ready to go!

Currently all Competitive and Creative Fortnite modes remain ungrouped, however we could see further implementation of Sub Modes in the future.

Earlier this year, Epic removed Fortnite’s “Game Mode Select Screen” and transitioned all playlists to a new “Discover” tab.

The idea was to get people straight into the most popular modes, while also making the wide range of Fortnite Creative maps and minigames more visible. Perhaps it achieved this, but many players complain that the new system is way too cluttered, and say it’s now actually harder to find what they’re looking for.

Hopefully Sub Modes can solve this and make loading up Fortnite a little less daunting for new players.
