Call of Duty’s new Battle Royale mode, Warzone, is blowing up right now, but will this be a problem for Fortnite fans?

We’ve seen it before with Apex Legends, haters say that Fortnite is going to die, Epic Games react, and eventually the new game hype calms down and things level out again. But will it be the same this time around, with Call of Duty already being such a well-established franchise, could they take the spot of number one Battle Royale?

The short answer is, probably not. But it is very possible that the two titles could compete, forcing each other to do better. Which, as Ali “SypherPK” Hassan explained in a recent YouTube video, can only be a good thing for us gamers.

We’re already seeing the first signs of Epic Games responding to Warzone’s release. It seems all too coincidental that after no competitive news for months, FNCS Duos was announced on the very same day as Warzone.

Just to get it out the way upfront, Sypher was not one of the creators paid by Activision to play Warzone, so we know that his opinions are not biased in any way. The first thing that he commented on was how well the new game is performing on Twitch. It has been consistently beating Fortnite since launch, however, this is expected for any brand-new release.

Sypher started theorising what Epic Games could do to keep Fortnite interesting. He suggested, “If they threw in siphon, if they brought in some new stuff…I think the helicopter’s honestly going to drop next week” that things could change for the better. He did also concede that whilst adding helicopters would definitely get some eyes on the game, it would have to be done right in order to avoid making matters worse.

Following on from this, Sypher discussed what Warzone elements he would like to see in Fortnite. One unique mechanic in Warzone is that the first time you die, you go to “The Gulag” and have a 1 vs 1 fight, with the winner coming back to life. He didn’t know exactly how this would look in Fortnite, but liked the “game within a game” concept.

The next topic was performance. Sypher, talked about how he didn’t experience any lag or frame drops whilst playing Warzone, despite having better graphics and 150 players per lobby. He is disappointed that Fortnite is still in such a bad state in this regard, but Epic Games have said that this is a priority and so we can at least try to remain optimistic.

Finally, Sypher made an important point, which I think more people need to understand. As video game fans, we shouldn’t pick sides, or pray on the downfall of titles we don’t like. The more high-quality, fun games, the better, and as competition increases, developers are forced to react. Even if you don’t want to play Warzone, you should not be concerned to see its success.
