When Epic released their statement on Aim Assist improvements, the community didn't know what to think about it. Now that the patch has been released, however, it's clear that Aim Assist got a buff.

Aim Assist got a buff with the v10.40 update.

The language Epic used in their original blog post made it difficult to tell what was going to happen. To me, it seemed like what Epic was saying was too good to be true. Turns out, it's not.

The best news, in my opinion, is that you can revert these changes if you don't like them. As you'll see in the clip below, though, that's probably not the best idea.

Enhanced Tracking

Aim Assist now improves your tracking instead of forcing you to rely on L2 spam to consistently hit your shots.

L2 spam isn't a thing anymore. Locking-on to your opponent as soon as you aim at them won't happen. Now, your crosshairs should be gravitating towards other players whether you're aiming at them or not.

This will greatly improve tracking and will even help inclose-range shotgun shots. Your hip-fire shots will now be far more reliable since aim-assist will be helping you out.

You're going to need slightly better natural tracking with this update since you can't rely on pressing L2 over and over again to hit your shots. That being said, Epic has added a wealth of customization options to make your settings as comfortable as possible.

Legacy Controls

If you miss the old L2 spam, you don't have to opt-into the new system.

To do this, ensure that your advanced aim settings are on, scroll to the bottom and choose "Legacy Look Controls." This will bring everything back to the way it was before the update.

If you're into the new system - which I think most good controller players will be - you don't have to completely rework your settings from scratch.

Scroll to the bottom of the settings and select "Copy Legacy Settings." This will translate all of your original settings to the new format.

If you want an in-depth look into the new settings, take a look at this post from nikhilbg on Reddit. It gives a detailed overview of the new system and some recommendations for an optimized layout.
